FAQ Answer:

Question:

What is the purpose of the "Description", "Title" and "Keywords" requested on your sign up form? Do the search engines adopt the Title, Description and Keywords (meta-tags), that are provided?

Answer:

"Title", "description" and "keywords" are three of the meta tags that are ordinarily used in the promotion of a website. They are to be found in the <head> section of the code supporting the web page.

Different search engines treat each of these meta tags in accordance with their own rules and regulations.  Most search engines consider the "title" tag to be most important. Therefore the "title" should be carefully designed to be of the proper length and include important search words.

At the present time it seems like about one third of the search engines ignore the "description" tag. This does not mean that care should not be taken in the development of the description. The description should contain important key words and phrases and be informative. The visitor reading the description and clicking on the website should find that the website contains the information that was described in the "description".

At the present time the "keyword" tag is ignored by some search engines. On the other hand, other search engines consider the keyword tag helpful. Great care should be taken to make certain that the keywords are targeted to the website. Using keywords that are not targeted to the website may be considered an abuse by certain search engines and cause the website position to be penalized.
